A contest? For student documentary photographers.

October 1, 2008 - February 1, 2009

General Set-Up of the Student Documentary Photography Contest

This contest is open to any photographer who is a student enrolled at an educational institution, at any level [High School, College, University etc.] or has been enrolled within the past 12 months.

Upon evaluation of work, we may ask for proof of student status.

The Vewd editorial board will narrow contest submissions to between 50 and 100 photo essays. Guest judges will then choose the top winners from Vewd's initial selection pool.

When you submit an essay to Vewd, you are allowing us to legally use your work, in what’s called a license. We will only accept the license if you win the contest, as we receive many, many talented photographers' work. You will always keep the copyright, and can revoke the license from us at any time. We are putting on this contest to help students, not to steal your photos.

What is Vewd looking for?

We are looking for well-developed photo stories on interesting subjects. Submissions should be the final edit of the essay consisting of between 10 and 40 pictures. Length of the essay will not be considered when judged. The photographs that you submit to Vewd must have been taken within the last four (4) years.
Photos must be 1000px on the longest side. There is no requirement for the shortest side. If they are not cropped and resized to these dimensions, they will not be considered in the contest.

If you are submitting your photos as a multimedia piece, you may have to e-mail us for help with this. (E-mail us)

How do I submit my photo essay?

Click Application near the top of the page. You will be directed to the Vewd submission page, this is universal and will not contain specific information about this contest.

A short description of the essay is required to assist judges in understanding your essay. This should be included on the photo uploading page in the large text box at the bottom, and written in English.

Grand prize winners may be asked to send high resolution files to Vewd so we are able to create your prizes – a high quality photo book featuring your essay.

In North Carolina?

Going to school in North Carolina? There is a specific category for North Carolina residents, sponsored by Guilford College. By entering your North Carolina address in the application form, your essay will then be eligible to win the International prize and the North Carolina prize. If you win the international competition, you shall only receive the international grand prize [bigger and better]. The runner up in the North Carolina division will then receive the North Carolinian grand prize.
